Christopher "c.l." Phelps - Biography
I have Lupus. Exposure to sunlight (UV light) causes my skin to reject itself like a bad donor organ. This diagnosis ended my short, but promising professional golfing career, but I wouldn't let it crush my spirit. Since there is no way to battle Tiger Woods and sunlight at the same time, I decided to focus my creativity on my other life-long passion -- art.

To make my mark in the art world, I figured out a way to harness the power of the sun, my kryptonite, and bring a brand new artistic process to the world.. The Phelps Process

Before I could invent the Phelps Process, I had some learning and growing up to do. I always knew that I could be a successful artist, but at the time of my Lupus diagnosis, I still believed in the "Art School Myth" : it is impossible to make a living in this day and age just selling your artwork. This myth is engrained in the brain of every artist who dares enter the academic halls.

I was told that I could only make a living creating art for businesses. Graphic design and illustration where the answer. My degree is actually a B.F.A. specializing in illustration and graphic design.

I took my degree/knowledge and founded a small, but successful graphic/web design business. Most of my work involved helping other small businesses establish and build their corporate identities (logo, stationery, websites, brochures, etc..).

I seemed to be good at what I was doing. I did not advertise; all of my business was word of mouth. I really enjoyed the fact that I was helping others build their businesses from the ground up; very rewarding. But eventually it stopped being fun. Something had to change!

Everyday that I spent gazing into the computer, in the back of my mind there was a paint brush and canvas screaming my name.

For years, everything I saw turned into a painting in my mind. I see the world in paint. I am constantly analyzing the scene in front of me to decide if it would make a fantastic piece of art to share with others.

These fantastic paintings kept stacking up in my head. The stack was getting so high, if I didn't do something soon it was going to get top heavy and topple over. The final spark that ignited my painting fire was my encounter with the work of Mike Fitzpatrick. Mike was an International Artist based in South Africa. My Mother-in-law was visiting South Africa and brought back a print of Mike's work. Mike's use of washed acrylic color was captivating.

I saved up some money and was able to purchase my own original Fitzpatrick that still hangs in my studio today. Hoping to pick the brain of the wonderful artist, I tried to get in touch with him. Unfortunately Mike passed away suddenly, before I was able to connect with him. However, I did make contact with his widow Lulu Fitzpatrick. Lulu is an amazingly strong and talented woman, and I want to thank her for her help. Lulu mentored me and let me in on some of Mike's secrets. Lulu is one of the most influential people in my young fine art career.

I took what I learned from Lulu, then studied the style/techniques of my other favorite artists (Nagel, Watterson, Hanks, DeVore, Hokusai).

I took elements from each artist and mixed them in with my style and a whole lot of passion. What emerged was a bold, colorful, powerful, emotional, and unique artistic voice. I created a new style of painting that would speak to the hearts of my viewers. Allowing them to see the world from a whole new perspective.

My paintings were received with great praise, but I knew that I still needed to push the envelope if I wanted to be the best. In order to be the best you have to show the world something brand new. This is what lead me to invent the Phelps Process. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do.
